A day like no other

This is a longer essay that Anita wrote, most likely for an English class in the fall of her senior year. This was a more in depth version of her college entrance essay that I previously published, “A significant experience“. As I have examined Anita’s writings from high school on, I am more convinced that [...]

Peanut butter and chocolate life

From Anita’s “God” file – mid 2009

Mine is a peanut-butter-and-chocolate life. Filled with pairs of things that are quite the opposite and seem, to the casual observer, to be strange & impossible bedfellows, yet seem to find their meeting place in me.

- the non-traditional (racially, mom at home) traditional family (1 parent raises the children, [...]

To My Dearest Brother

To My Dearest Brother
by Anita Parker

Remember
Raw bacon
Mom forbade us to eat
Hiding behind the car
Inviting pink flesh slipped through our fingers
On the waves of cold, white, greasy fat.
Slimy hands and telltale fingerprints
Give us away

Childlike tickle games
You chase me, then I chase you
Laughter, never-ending fun

Smoke rings from the full brownness of your lips amaze me
I hide cigarettes [...]

Anita’s future vision

Written for a college application ( I am guessing for George Washington University in St. Louis)

The year is 2013. Eddie Murphy is the president of the United States and a new fad diet is circulating. The participants must gorge themselves with Doritos and Ding-Dongs.

Anita Parker sits at her kitchen table reading the newspaper, waiting for [...]

Golden Beauty

Golden Beauty
by A.L.P.

Last night I dreamt I
Walked the shores of golden
Beauty –

Everything was perfect
Nothing out of hand
Nowhere was there sadness
No teardrops in the sand

Everyone was happy
No teary eyes in sight
Everyone loved one another
And no one would ever fight

War was out of the questions
Hate was never thought of
They had a promise to one another
For eternity, peace, [...]

Anita’s bed

Today is Anita’s birthday. She would have been 38 years old. For this special day, I wanted to share with you an essay from high school of some observations of herself.

This was a English class essay that Anita wrote when she was 16 (spring of her junior year or fall of her senior year). It [...]

I’m really tired, Heavenly Father

From Anita’s journal:

9/16/05

I’m really tired, Heavenly Father. Please help me through the night. Please bless and keep watch over my family – new job, going to mom & dad’s, marriage, career.

Greg – please be with him as he deals with Ben’s preschool issue, and please be with Ben, too.

Ben + Julia – I love them. [...]

A significant experience

This morning I found a Personal Statement that Anita wrote for her college applications (one that went to several colleges). Part of the directions said to “Evaluate a significant experience or achievement that has special meaning to you.”

On March 29, 1988, a very close friend of mine was killed in a car accident. Do you [...]

Kid journals – Ben

Another journal that Anita kept was one about things the kids did. She only wrote about 10 entires each over the course of two years, but they are really meaningful entires and I think the kids will treasure them forever. Here is one of the entires from Ben’s journal.

I came home late tonight [...]

Surrender

from Anita’s notes – early 2006.

Surrender -
How do I surrender myself?

How do I work as hard as I must but also allow Him to do His work? How do I figure out the distinction between His work and my work? When I cross the line, the work I try to do becomes exhausting,  When I slack [...]
